Around 2010, Whitehorse United Church (WUC) was going through the search procedure for a new minister. Of course that meant lots of meetings and discussions as WUC worked on its wish list. One of the items on that list was not to have a gay minister. Concerns were expressed about families and children.

A year or more after our new minister came, I was with another WUC attendee at local business event. The receptionist there started a conversation about how she had heard that our new minister was gay, and weren’t we concerned or worried about that. Both of us were quick to answer that his gayness was irrelevant in the situation.

As a congregation – have our new minister who was gay allowed us to shed stereotypes that we had been holding in our hearts and minds.
