The Can of Worms
I was there in 1988 and my first thought was, “Do we really have to open this can of worms?” I believed that it was not an issue that impacted enough people that it required a formal stand by any church. I was aware of the variety of sexual orientations and really thought that someone’s sexual orientation was none of my business or my church’s.
I was fairly liberal-minded but thought sex and sexual expression was a private matter of an individual and should be kept that way.
As the years have passed I have learned a great deal more about the impact of sexual orientation on a person’s feelings of acceptance in a predominantly heterosexual world and that we do have a responsibility as a church to lead by showing our acceptance of all people in a public way, especially those who are marginalized often by general society.
